Stock Exchange Council

The governing body of the London Stock Exchange. Its primary concern is to see that the rules of the Exchange are observed in line with its motto, ‘Dictum meum pactum’ – ‘My word is my bond’. Any member acting in breach of the rules or in any way threatening the overriding interests of the investing public will be liable to disciplinary action by the Council. Such action can range from a fine to suspension of membership.

The Council is also the body which is responsible for acceptance of securities for listing and will scrutinize closely the affairs of any company applying for a quotation. Through the Council the Exchange offers guided tours to the public and provides a visitors’ gallery open daily with no charge for admission. There is also a cinema which shows colour films on the activities of the Stock Exchange.
