Hammered

A member of the Stock Exchange is hammered when he cannot meet his debts. The process is named from the three strokes of the hammer delivered by the waiter at the Stock Exchange as a prelude to the announcement of the name of the defaulter. It is said to be the only effective way of producing silence in the Stock Exchange.
