Prior to the common use of the cheque card or credit card, open credit facilities were the most effective way in which people could obtain cash from a bank other than at the branch where their own account was kept. By prior arrangement, open credit facilities up to a predetermined amount could be given at a particular bank in another town by a customer’s own bank.
