Production, census of

A full census of all major manufacturing, mining, construction and public utility industries has been carried out in the U.K. on a regular officia! basis since 1910. These censuses give information about employment, outputs and inputs in each industrial subgroup. Before 1968 full censuses were taken every five years, but since 1970 annua!, though more limited, inquiries have been conducted. The information is essential for much official statistical work, such as the national accounts and the index of the output of production industries.
