Enterprise allowance scheme

Set up by the Manpower Services Commission in 1983 to assist unemployed persons set up their own businesses. Applicants for aid must fulfil prescribed conditions and could then receive an allowance of up to £40 per week for a year. Advice from business counsellors and the small firms information centre was also available.
