Delegatus non potest delegare

A legal maxim that states effectively that when an agent has contracted to do work for a principal, he has no implied right to delegate the work to a third party. In practice this does not always apply. Subcontracting is customary in many trades. The maxim applies mostly where the personality of the agent is important.
