Variable

A number capable of taking different values. In mathematics a variable is regarded simply as a general abstract concept, with no necessary real counterpart. In any applied science such as economics, however, variables are usually identified with actual magnitudes of interest, e.g. consumption and investment will be regarded as variables in a model og income determination.
